With the warm weather coming our way, we all want to maintain our gardens using as little water as possible. Here are a few tips to help you water less but keep your garden alive throughout summer!
1. Water your gardens in the morning and pot plants in the afternoon. Research has shown that pot plants watered in the afternoon become stronger and healthier. When watering, make sure you don't wet the foliage as this can cause fungal disease.
2. Mulch, mulch and more mulch! Did you know 70% of water can evaporate from soil on a hot day? Applying mulch will substantially decrease this amount, keeping your plants happy and healthy!
3. Add compost or organic matter to help your soil retain water, while also improving the soil structure and feeding your plants healthy nutrients.
4. Get to know your soil this summer! Take a close look to see how deep water penetrates your soil to determine how often and for how long you need to water.
5. Choose your plants wisely. If you're looking to cut back on watering, choose plants with low water requirements, such as natives. Plants with small or narrow leaves, grey or silver foliage and those with curly leaves are common choices for water saving plants.
With these tips and tricks your garden should continue to thrive right through until March and beyond.

Available as 7-14mm, 20-40mm and 40-80mm aggregate, it's perfect for decorative purposes such as lawn replacements and garden features. It is also available as 7mm toppings and a decomposed granite sand, which are great for areas requiring compaction such as driveways and footpaths.

This Japanese art form is derived from ancient horticultural practices, which was then redeveloped under the influence of Buddhism.
Any plant or tree can be made into a Bonsai, but there are a few types that do particularly well. Some of our favourites include Japanese, Canadian and Liquid Maples, Junipers, Olive Trees, Banksias, Grevilleas and more! Bonsai are best suited to a shaded area protected from the elements (especially hot winds which make them dry out fast).
It is important to remember that every couple of years your Bonsai needs to be taken out of its pot so the root system can be trimmed and rewired.

Over the past couple of weeks, the team at ASQ Skydancers have been participating in the 'Love Food, Hate Waste' program introduced by Sustainability Victoria to help Victorian hospitality businesses reduce their food waste.
We recently completed a review to identify where food waste occurs most in the café. From reviewing spoilage, preparation, plate waste and end of day surplus we have discovered that 67% of waste comes from plates and 33% comes from preparation.
After receiving the results from the review, we developed an action plan to dramatically reduce the amount of food we throw away over coming months. The plan includes strategies for decreasing waste by changing the way we order, store and prepare food as well as watching the portion sizes of items often left on plates at the end of a meal.
Over the coming months as we trial our action plan and continue to review our waste, we encourage you to participate in the program at home by reviewing your waste and creating an action plan.
