Top tips to keep your pond clean
Follow these tips to help keep your pond clean this summer... without too much effort!
Don’t have too many fish. You should have less than 10 inches of fish for every 3,000 litres of water. If you have more than this the pond is over populated and you will need to re-home some.
Don’t over feed your fish. If you feed your fish too much, the uneaten food will decay on the bottom of the pond.
Get the right size pump. This will ensure the entire volume of water is pumped once every hour. Make sure your pump filter is cleaned regularly. Check your pumps flow rate on the box as each pump is different.
Create the right balance of plants. No more than 40-60% of the pond surface area should be covered by plants or shade. Too many plants can cause oxygen deficiencies at night due to the photosynthetic process.
Clean debris before it decays. Clean fallen leaves out of the pond when you see them instead of letting them rot on the bottom.
Keep you pond cool on hot days. When water gets too hot it's harder to maintain oxygen levels. If you see your fish at the surface of the pond you need to add an aerator or some oxidising plants.
Proper filtration. Make sure the filter matches the size of your pond. You can go up a size in filters, but never go down a size, and remember to clean it regularly.
